In multitasking, you make the decision to try to do two things at the same time or more than two. What could be a distraction could be multitasking - so if you were in the bookshop and instead of ignoring the conversation on the next table, you decided to talk with your friend that would be multitasking. The first part I would say is awareness and just being a little introspective about how your ability to engage in something that's important to you has been degraded by trying to split it up. And then use that awareness as a jumping off point to develop strategies and new habits for single tasking.
