The Depression of the 1930s
The 1890s is a period in which Australia experiences its worst ever economic depression. It's very hard to estimate the depth of the depression because there's no decent unemployment statistics. The only series we've got is for engineers and that suggests that probably about 20% of the population was unemployed, but I suspect it was much higher in some occupations. And how does that depression affect Melbourne? Well, I think I mean, I think it it's a severe psychological blow.
