The book is a kind of coming of age story, both or from the individual who is a child. But also it's a kind of Coming of Age for the country, because it's maturing through this difficult, dark socialist past. And so you can see in both cases the difficulties of making this transition and moving from one dramatic phase to another. What i absolutely loved while reading the book was getting to se subjective viewpoint of actually watching in real time political concepts, notions of freedom, start to lose their grip as material reality was shifted.
