The Importance of Energy for Athletes

There are problems from both underfeeling and then I don't want to call it over-refueling. If you're the athlete who is expending 4,000 calories a day and you need to eat a lot of food that is a challenge at times for your gastrointestinal system to handle comfortably. Low energy availability contributes in a lot of endurance athletes to metabolic, hormonal, and performance problems if it's sustained for long periods of time. Those problems extend to the gut. The low-energy thing is a little bit under-studied when it comes to GI symptoms and athletes. It can cause bloating, fullness, nausea, reflux when they try and feel during exercise.
