CHAPTER

The Origins of Pergamon

Parchment is an exceptionally biological material. Books are now typically made from wood pulp paper but for a long time the production of a book was so labor intensive in a way it's not surprising they were so prized because they were so expensive to make. Every spread of pages every few pages would need an entire animal you need to raise a cow or a sheep or a goat in order to get its skin in order to make parchment. So how many animals per book oh wow that's a hairde that’s a hairdo  of cows or sheep you're holding in your hand there.
