Robert Houdin was the son of a clockmaker in Blois, France. His father had hoped that his academically inclined son might pursue law as a career and help his family move up in the world. He went into the family business and became a clockmaker. Then one day by chance, while buying a book on clockwork mechanics, the bookseller accidentally slipped him in an illustrated dictionary of what were called, quote, scientific amusements. Soon he was attending every fair he could to catch the magic axe. At one such fair, he made the mistake of eating something a little sketchy from one of the concession stands,. And he came down with a brutal case of food poisoning
