John Brown helped fund David Walker's appeal, which was published in 1829. Walker called for enslaved people to rise up against their owners. Henry Highland Garnet gave a speech at the National Negro Convention that became known as the call to rebellion. He said: "Rather die freemen than live to be slaves"
