40 publishers in the united states turned the book down. A british publisher finally brought it out in the uk where it received 100 reviews and was a best seller. The book did not do as well in the united States, but it was made into a film. But the movie, too was met with fear. After some early opening success theatre after theatre declined to show the picture. According to greenley, theatre managers had told him that they were dropping his film after visits from the fbi. In a final bit of subterfuge, the director apparently stored the negative in a film can with a different label to make sure that it wasn't seized and destroyed. It was discovered
