The Tri-Functional Hypothesis of Sovereignty in Indo-European Mythology

Most of the goddesses found in later Indo-European religions are actually derived from pre-Indo-European substrate religions that were integrated into Indo-European religion. Dumazil brought both the tri-functional hypothesis and the concept of dual representation of sovereignty to the school of Indo-European comparative mythology. He focused on sovereign gods, often coming in pairs, as distinct from Sky gods. It is unclear whether Skyfather was the highest of gods and held a sovereign function for proto-indo-Europeans or whether a different god was the sovereign and highest.
