The Risks of Populism in British Politics
Gideon Wolfenden: I have a question or a pattern about this assumption that populism is necessarily anti-democratic and authoritarian. Do you see the mobilization of populist themes in British politics as ever a risk to British democracy? Or do you think this was just a bit of a carnival that never really jeopardized the key institutions in the country? This is going back to the initial question to Gideon, whether authoritarianism abroad and populism at home can really be pulled together as part of the same conversation. The gender aspect is very important. It's not surprising that populists don't like checks and balances. They aren't very good at making an intellectual case.
