The Death of Shostakovich
Shostakovich at this point considered suicide. But amazingly, a conversation with Stalin himself helped save him. Told to go to New York to represent a Soviet Congress of composers, Shostakovich refused. He said that he couldn't represent band music. After telling this to Stalin himself over the phone, the next day the band on his music was rescinded.
