Charles Ives was experimenting with some of the most atonal and dissonant music before 20th century even began. Schoenberg himself wrote music in a late romantic, polytonal, nearly atonal but very consonant atonal style. Music from cultures around the world have relied on diatonic harmony and the pentatonic scale for millennia. In 1909, this all began to change, at least for Western classical music.
