The theme of the waste land is exactly what the theme of joyce's ulysses was. A person who lives a life simply doing what his society tells him to do constitutesa society of wasteland dwellers, everybody living not authentically at all. The great authentic experience, the depth experience of your own deepest nature, is compassion for others. This is the romantic experience represented in wordsworth's lines above tintern abbey. That's what the world is waiting for, in authentic life.
