Some trees put a lot of energy into their leaves because they don't want to just let them drop. They would be able to compete better in that instance, whereas the deciduous trees are still dormant. So it's more of a balance of which is more functionable for this tree at the right time. Sometimes deciduous doesn't make any sense because the conditions are so good where you're like, "Why get rid of my leaves?"
