The Importance of Critical Thinking in Reading
The study by Rekton Leslie was done in the late 1980s, interestingly, but it's been replicated multiple times. The kids who were low readers but who knew a lot about baseball outperformed the kids who were high readers who didn't know much about baseball. It doesn't matter how good a reader you are if you don't understand what those phrases mean. That breakdowns and understanding are more knowledge-based than they are skill-based.
