UPN's Success With a Black Sitcom
The pilot for Moisha, starring singer Brandy, was originally commissioned by CBS. But they took a pass on the show, which was about a 16-year-old girl who lives with her dad, stepmom, and brother in South Central LA. UPN snatched it up and quickly became one of the network's biggest successes. During its six-season run, Moisha was nominated for 32 awards and won three, two NAACP Image Awards and won Shine Award. It also led to a successful spinoff called The Parker's, which followed Moisha's friend Kim Parker played by Countess Vaughn as she navigates attending college at the same time as her mom.
