The History of the American Lawn
In the 1920s, we had a golfing craze. It affected what we planted and how that turf was grown. Golf is really hard on turf. So the USDA at the time created a tougher grass to be able to be planted on golf course. After World War I, factories were making a lot of bombs. Instead of just letting all this equipment and technology sit idle, instead of producing explosives, now you can produce fertilizer for your front yard. A lot of bomb-making factories became fertilizer factories. In following World War II, there was a new market for this fertilizer. Veterans returning after World War II took advantage of government policies like the GI Bill to not just return to school
