The Great Migration

The Great Migration, beginning during the First World War, brought millions from the south to the north and west. Over 90% of all American blacks still lived in the south under Jim Crow. For all the pervasive racism in the south, blacks were needed as a source of cheap labor. Many left in the dead of night with little more than the clothes on their backs.
