In Our Time

CHAPTER

The Power of the Architect

Vitruvius uses this catalogue of machines to reiterate the point that the architect is the mind behind them all. Interestingly, one of the examples he gives of an architect successfully using some machinery to defeat an enemy is about the siege of Marseille. The person who was conquered, albeit temporarily, in this anecdote was Julius Caesar. But the book didn't have as far as we know, as far as I've read from what you three have ever written. It didn't have a great influence in the few centuries following.
