The Story of Nanchao
The armies of Nanchao marched through the narrow mountain passes, thickly carpeted with forest. They swept through the Burmese lowlands taking both plunder and slaves. According to ancient sources, the Nanchao deported many thousands of the Pew people who lived and farmed in this fertile valley. But these troops had dreams of going their own way; they would later found a kingdom there. The Mi'en built a walled fortress at a place on the eastern bank of the Irowadi river, which became known as Bhagarn.
