Is There a Single Right Answer?

There's no single right answer. That doesn't mean that anything goes in that every possible solution is equally good. I've never worked anywhere where they use service objects extensively. And for all I know it works out fine, but I'm suspect probably doesn't. It just doesn't seem very fun after a while. Yeah. Care about code almost as much as we care about soup.
