In the 1920s, Germany had hate speech laws under which hundreds of Nazi newspapers were shut down. Joseph Goebbels and Julius Stryker, the publisher of D'Estermer, were prosecuted. Hitler was banned from speaking in several German states a couple of years. Now, the Nazis embraced their role as free speech martyrs. One Nazi poster said, why is Adolf Hitler not allowed to speak? Because he wants to free the workers from the domination of big money.
