Don't Try to Get Cute. That's Classic.
Don't try to be clever or cute. It rarely works, but certainly not at the expense of being clear and communicating to people effectively. When you do that, it's easier to deliver the story conversationally. You don't have time to let this subplot develop over, you know, over 30 minutes or 10 scenes. You've got to get to it.
