Freud's Resistance to the Cure

If the ego is pressing down, if we can think about it, ego is pressing back, repressing the idea. If this were not the case, the psychical apparatus would work differently because there's more of an expenditure in repression than in working through and associatively integrating. There's still so much unpleasure in actually connecting the links together. It's a fixation of the drive to these alternate means that it's found providing satisfaction despite that repression.
