National park service data from 20 20 showed that 77 % of visitors to the 419 parks were white. Just six percent identified as black. Jim crow's segregation policies, formalized 19 16, allowed for white's only areas in national parks up until segregation was abolished in 19 64. This history has been blamed for the vast racial disparity in annual national park visitorship.
