Most of the action was centered between Seventh Avenue and Lennox, now Malcolm X Boulevard. Tuxedo clad Gladys Bentley one of the first known cross-dressing Black lesbian performers in America. Other bands headed by Cad Callaway, Don Redmond, and Garland Wilson got their starts in Harlem too. One newspaper saw fit to educate white people on black culture.
