In 1996, Hekmatyar smuggled Osama Bin Laden into Afghanistan via a very luxurious private jet. In the warm embrace of the Afghan frontier, Bin Laden's now notorious terrorist network al-Qaeda was able to expand and network unmolested by the CIA. The Taliban had taken over two-thirds of Afghanistan and driven Ahmed Shama-sud back to his fortress valley in the pan-shear. From there, he fought a desperate and cash-strapped guerrilla war against the Taliban just as he had fought against the Soviets so many years before.
