CHAPTER

The Rite of Spring - Part One

Stravinsky's Rite of Spring is based almost exactly on a Lithuanian folk song called You, My Sister. This is by no means the only folk song Stravinsky quotes in the piece, despite his claims to the contrary. What Stravinsky did throughout the piece was to take folk melodies that were actually collected by a Lithuanian researcher named Anatanas Yuska. He collected 7,000 fragments of folk themes during his life and this was the collection that Stravinsky referred to during the composition of the Rite of Spring.
