The Evolution of Languages
The PhD was about using computational models, probabilistic models of inference and optimization methods to understand how languages evolve. I studied how evolutionary processes interacted learning processes. The insight from the model is that if you have an evolutionary process that's adapting some sort of like genetic representation to an environment that if you add the possibility for learning then you get this much richer evolutionary process with really interesting dynamics.
