The Use of Dewey Decimal Classes in the 1890s
In the 1890s, Alle and Hollerith were dealing with large amounts of information using slips of paper. The country coding thing I mentioned comes from an auxiliary table. A colon in a UDC number represents relation. This means you can code for text of one category that relate to another.
