The Myth of Qualified Immunity
There's a myth that officers are personally responsible for settlements and judgments in these cases, which is simply not true. Even if it weren't for qualified immunity, they would, so qualified immunity is protecting nothing. So even if there's a finding, there's indemnification agreements around the country that provide that if an officer is sued, you will be given a lawyer and a settlement or judgment will be paid by the city.
