The book is designed to mirror the Odyssey. To obfuscate that mythological underpinning, Joyce has actually deleted the titles of all of the chapters. You have to go back to the table of contents to find the chapter names. Each chapter is one hour in his life. It tells you when you're in a new episode, but doesn't tell you the name of that episode.
