For Gandhi, the individual was the transcendent unit of political life. He contrasted what he saw as the virtues and the values of Indian civilization against that of Western civilization. Hinswaraj rests on an idea of personal independence, personal self-sufficiency. Politics is nothing if it can't be rooted in what individuals decide for themselves.
