The Evolution of Traumatic Insemination in Bed Bugs
The way that bed bugs mate is very different than most bugs. The males pierce the females abdominal wall in order to inseminate them, not the genital tract directly. This process is called traumatic insemination because it's literally causing direct trauma to the abdominal wall of the female. It has also led to the evolution of an entirely new, like para-genital tract, which is still though not actually used for insemination.
