We do know from archaeological evidence that there were people living in the place that we call Paris now, four or five thousand years ago. The earliest people that were important in fact in the Roman and then the medieval city were in fact the boatmen,. Even under the Roman Empire were probably the most important cooperative group. Those sort of merchants are really, really important there.
