The Rise and Fall of the Hellfire Club
The Hellfire Club came to public attention in 1721. The scandal-hungry London press ran wildly exaggerated stories about the co-ed aristocratic group who allegedly burned sulfur as they blasphemed God. Most of these stories were based on very little truth, according to historian Evelyn Lord. But it was not the end of the Hellfire story: There would be other scandalous aristocratic societies that became better known and more deeply associated with the Hellfire label than the original club. Were these later groups more hellish than the original? Well, let's find out.
