The Great Uprising
The Holy Week Uprising is the name given to the ten days of violence that followed Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. Almost 200 American cities experienced simultaneous rioting, arson, sniper attacks and massive property damage. It took a total of 58,000 National Guardsmen and Army soldiers to contain the violence. The Great Uprising's Peter Levy writes that during this week, quote, The United States experienced its greatest wave of social unrest since the Civil War.
