Heat Pumps Aren't for Cold Climates, but They Work

heat pumps are still pretty darn efficient even at temperatures we'd consider pretty cold. The challenge is that there are some periods in Maine and other northern climate areas where the temperature goes, you know, well below zero very occasionally. This leads to another really big systemic problem for heat pumps if we were really going to start to electrify a lot of heating in cold climates. During those extremely cold periods, the peak electricity load needed to service that heating demand just spikes tremendously.
