Foucault's Genealogy and Methodology

Foucault refers to discipline and punish as a genealogy of the present political and scientific complex from which power derives its basis. Like his predecessor Nietzsche, Foucault's notion of genealogy opposes itself to a search for origins. The impact of the birth of disciplinary societies and the human sciences was not to punish less, but to punish better. They are an insurrection against those very forms of power knowledge and its productive processes.
