The History of Gravitational Waves
There was a big debate during the, I want to say 60s about whether gravitational waves were real or not. Feynman gets a lot of credit for this but he wasn't the first person to propose it. The sticky bead argument is that as a gravitational wave passes by, it's influence on freely falling test masses. And if they're allowed to actually rub on the rod, then that means that they can heat up the rod.
