The book is assembled in such a non-heroic way that it makes you aware of all the pieces that aren't there. Academic history is written to suture you into the narrative and keep you in the pocket, so to speak. But when you sort of finally lay your cards on the table and the afterward and say it's the pacifists for me all along, I think one of the things I identified with so strongly was that you identify with a certain moment of failure.
