The Open Access Movement and the Problems It Faces

The Open Access movement is encouraging scientists to publish in what are called Open Access journals. But the research funders are demanding that primary research papers be published, but they're not demanding that review papers are. So reviews are probably the best way of getting a good, balanced understanding of scientific progress out to the general public. And if you really want to open access for the public to understand what's going on, then what you need to do is to invest in making reviews, good reviews, accessible to the public.
