Emily and Thomas Wentworth Higginson
In August of 1870, Thomas Wentworth Higginson makes a trip to finally meet Emily for the first time at her home in Amherst. He later confessed that he had never before been with anyone who drained his nerve power so much. There is no doubt that this was a pivotal moment for Emily. She suspected her own greatness and was offended by his inadequacy to perceive it. Sadly, Higginson only realized the scope of Emily's genius after she died in 1886.
