The Evolution of Monarchs and Milkweed

Anurag: The monarch has won the co-evolutionary battle. It's immune to the cardiac glycosides. Most of the insects that feed on milkweed are brightly colored and aposomatic, but not all of them. There's one or two exceptions; most of them bring in these toxins into their bodies. Anurag: I think there's a lot more kind of ecology to be done now that we have living organisms flies that are very much like monarchs,. But they're not. So we know how we've changed them, and we can ask them questions to teach us more.
