i find it quite striking that most social scientists who are very good at describing how things work are themselves non believers, or at least sceptics. And they also seem to have a prejudice of believing that they can be objective and diagnose everybody else without turning the camera on themselves. But i think even then, and certainly in works like charles taylor 's a secular age, there is an attempt a kind of diagnose what exactly this religious impulse or set of uses is, and what it does.
