There's room for both approaches to quantitative trading. It's fair to say that computers can't understand nuance but it's also fair to says that humans are really unreliable practitioners. Human pilots when they're in charge of airplanes sometimes take the plane to the wrong airport because they were busy distracted playing a soudoku puzzle this is a true story. In sports like baseball and football you'll hear coaches pointing at mechanics what does that mean i mean he's not doing the exact same thing over and we're just changed his arm angle slightly or something similar.
