Shostakovich's Invasion Theme
Maxime Shostakovich, the composer's son, was at the premiere of the piece. He said that night after the premiere he couldn't get to sleep because in the distance he could almost hear the snare drum playing the invasion theme. The ending of this mammoth piece is appropriately powerful with the entire orchestra joining in for a rousing conclusion.
