The assault weapons ban that passed in 19 94 had what is referred to as a sunset provision in it. It would lapse after ten years unless congress took action to extend the ban. We have seen substantial increases in mass shootings since the lapse, particularly high casualty mass shootings. The senate framework includes an enhanced background check for people under the age of 21 and some increased penalties for straw purchasing.
