I think the greatest ability of democracy, you think, is like compromise, acknowledge the messiness of the world. And would say that the ideal speech conditions are missing in most democracies. So what I would say is have many discursive spaces, but then be intentional about how we can encourage deliberation that actually has impact.

Congressman Ro Khanna is an American politician, lawyer, and academic. He is currently serving as U.S. Representative for California's 17th district, including much of Silicon Valley.
