The History of Women's Football
In the year 1970, Italy hosted a Women's World Cup. It was organised by an Italian organisation known as the Federation of Independent European Female Football. Teams from England, West Germany, Denmark, Mexico, Austria, Italy and Switzerland travelled to play in the tournament. Most of these were not official women's teams, as women's football may have been banned in those countries at the time. A year later in 1971, a second Women’s World Cup was organised in Mexico. There are some very interesting stories from this tournament including how France and Netherlands didn't know it was a FIFA-recognised game until after they played each other. The final of that tournament was between Mexico and Denmark
